Italy's role in enhancing the archaeological heritage, not only Italian, was explored during a conference entitled 'Media and Culture in the Field of Archaeology', held in Manama, the capital of Bahrain, by the director of the Archaeological Museum of Taranto, Stella Falzone, at the invitation of the Italian Ambassador to Bahrain, Andrea Catalano.
The event, promoted by the diplomatic office together with the Centre for Culture and Research 'Shaikh Ebrahim Bin Mohammed Al Khalifa', is part of the cultural promotion activities of the Embassy of Italy in Bahrain within the six-monthly cultural review of the Centre and aims at enhancing Italy's archaeological heritage, Italian expertise in the fields of restoration and enhancement of historical sites, as well as the promotion of tourism in Italian regions.
"Universally recognised as a 'superpower of beauty and culture', Italy plays an absolutely central role in archaeology at an international level," said Ambassador Catalano. In 2024 alone, the Farnesina supported 287 Italian missions abroad through the granting of contributions or institutional awards. Italy's leading role does not only derive from the unreachable relevance of its artistic, cultural and natural heritage, but also from a human capital of the highest level. I am thinking, for example, of the 70 or so Italian officials working at Unesco, whose quality and dedication are unanimously recognised. In addition to them, there is a vast network of experts - technicians, craftsmen, engineers, scientists, archaeologists, restorers - who offer their expertise for interventions in the field, for the preparation of technical dossiers and for the training of experts in other countries. In the field of restoration, for example, in which it plays a role of excellence worldwide, Italy has implemented numerous projects through Unesco for the recovery and restoration of deteriorating archaeological and historical-artistic sites in the Mediterranean basin, Iraq, Afghanistan, Africa and South-East Asia. And it is precisely this refined and priceless capital of expertise that is recognised all over the world,' Ambassador Catalano concluded, 'that we are celebrating and that we hope will constitute a further instrument of bilateral cooperation.
