Premier Giorgia Meloni on Thursday
arrived at the Elysee Palace in Paris where she was welcomed by
French President Emmanuel Macron who is hosting the Summit on
Peace and Security of Ukraine.
The summit featuring the so-called coalition of the willing is
attended by some 30 heads of State and government as well as
representatives of European institutions and Nato Secretary
General Mark Rutte.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is at the gathering after
being received last night at the Elysee by Macron who has
announced that France will provide further military aid to the
country worth 2 billion euros.
In addition to Meloni, other participants include British
Premier Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Turkish
Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz, as well as Rutte and European
Union leaders, among others.
The agenda of the meeting features the "finalization" of
security guarantees to be offered to Kyiv in the event of a
peace agreement with Russia.
In particular, four major issues are set to be discussed: the
continuation of military aid to Ukraine and the contribution of
each country; the details of a "full" ceasefire, the
preparations for a potential post-truce phase and the conditions
for the deployment of a European force in Ukraine to police the
ceasefire, a proposal spearheaded by Paris and London.
On Wednesday, Meloni's office at Palazzo Chigi said Italy won't
participate in any possible military force to police a future
ceasefire in Ukraine after a government summit there ahead of
the coalition of the willing meeting in Paris.
It also noted that Rome is convinced Ukraine should have
guarantees in a Euro-Atlantic context after any possible future
ceasefire deal with Russia.
The government meeting hosted by Meloni, which was attended by
the two deputy premiers - Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani and
Transport Minister Matteo Salvini - as well as Defence Minister
Guido Crosetto, focused on the implementation of a future
ceasefire in which a possible role of the United Nations to
police it, championed by Rome, is gaining ground, according to
ta note issued by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's office.
