Brussels has launched an infringement
procedure against Italy and 25 other EU capitals for not having
fully transposed into national law the directive on the reform
of the EU electricity market, adopted in the midst of the energy
price crisis, the European Commission announced Thursday.
The EC said governments had until 17 January to notify the
transposition, with the exception of the provisions on free
choice of supplier and energy sharing, for which they have until
July 2026. To date, only Denmark has notified within the
deadline.
The other capitals, including Rome, which have received the
letter of formal notice, now have two months to respond,
complete the transposition and notify the measures to the
Commission. In the absence of a satisfactory response, the
Commission may decide to issue a reasoned opinion and therefore
continue the infringement procedure.
