Premier Giorgia Meloni told the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Washington DC on Saturday evening that Ukraine had been "attacked" and that it will be necessary to work "together" to build a fair and long-lasting peace in the country thanks to "strong" leaderships like US President Donald Trump's who will not "move away from Europe", contrary to what "our adversaries" hope.
"Our adversaries are hoping for divisions" and that Trump "will move away from us" Europeans but they "will be proven wrong" - "I know him, he is strong and effective", said Meloni.
"I know some of you may see Europe as distant or lost, I tell you it is not", the premier told the convention in her speech via video link in which she called for Italy's rightful place on the international stage and hailed the "deep unbreakable bond with the US".
The Ukrainian population is is "fighting for freedom" against a brutal aggression, Meloni went on to say in her speech, calling for "progress to build a long-lasting peace" - "a peace that can only be built with everybody's contribution, but especially with strong leaderships".
"With Trump, we will not witness the disaster seen in Afghanistan ever again", she added.
Meloni also spoke of her "pride" as a European and conservative.
Far from being lost, she noted, Europe is stronger today that more conservatives are in government, also thanks to CPAC's battle that "created a global network that gives voice to millions of people who couldn't speak".
It will be able to reconquer its role, just like the government is doing in Italy, said Meloni.
"The propaganda said that a conservative government" would have "isolated" Italy, while it was "fake" because "we are increasing freedoms in all aspects of the country's life", she noted.
It is necessary to clearly tell the "radical Left that wants to cancel our history and undermine our identity", to those trying to "sabotage the West from within with the virus of cancel culture and woke ideology, that we will never be ashamed of what we are", said Meloni.
"No West can exist without America", said the premier while stressing that, at the same time, "no West can exist without Europe".
