The president of the Union of Italian
Jewish Communities Noemi Di Segni on Friday said members will
only take part in select events to mark Holocaust Remembrance
Day on January 27.
Di Segni told Radio Radicale that it was necessary to be
"pragmatic and rational" following the past "divisive months,
with demonstrations of hatred and distortions" of reality which
could "convince us to not attend anything".
The Union of Italian Jewish Communities has sounded the alarm at
anti-Semitism and anti-Israel sentiment at a number of protests
over the past few months.
"In Italy, compared to other nations, the highest institutions
promote and participate in extremely elevated initiatives, like
the one at the Quirinale [palace] with President Mattarella",
stressed Di Segni.
She went on to say that community members had thus decided to
take part in ceremonies that will focus "on Holocaust
Remembrance Day and nothing else".
