On 25 and 26 March, the workshop 'Contributions of Italian Cooperation in Applied Scientific Research in the Earth Sciences' was held at the University of El Salvador (Ues), with the participation of authorities and professors from Italian and Central American universities. The event is an opportunity to highlight Italian commitment to the promotion of innovative and quality scientific initiatives in partner countries, such as El Salvador.
The Italian Ambassador to El Salvador, Paolo Emanuele Rozo Sordini, emphasised that 'Italy boasts 164 years of diplomatic relations with El Salvador, and development cooperation is one of the main tools for promoting these relations, which are centred on dialogue and mutual enrichment. In particular, this two-day workshop highlighted the broad and fruitful collaboration between Italian and Salvadoran institutions in scientific research in the field of geology, developed in the context of the Castes project. In this context, Ambassador Rozo Sordini added that 'the geosciences laboratory inaugurated in October 2024 is the concrete and tangible image of Italy enhancing university and academic cooperation, product quality, and high-level technology'.
Thanks to the project financed by the Italian Government and implemented by the University of Palermo (Unipa), in cooperation with the University of Studies 'G. d'Annunzio' Chieti-Pescara (Unich), a degree course in Earth Sciences with an emphasis in Geology was also established at the Universidad de El Salvador (Ues). The project strengthened scientific training in Geological Sciences, both theoretical and applied, for risk management and mitigation, as well as contributing to the improvement of the national capacity for sustainable management of natural resources and environmental hazards. Paolo Gallizioli, director of the San Salvador office of the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS), recalled that 'in El Salvador, Italy is funding projects in various sectors by collaborating with seven Italian universities, which are making an important contribution not only economically but also in terms of training and research in key areas for the country.
