The Italian Embassy in Abu Dhabi hosted a prestigious event at the Italian residence to celebrate Grim2025, the Day of Italian Research in the World. The day aims to highlight the contributions of Italian researchers and academics working abroad, showing Italy's commitment to science, technology and innovation. The Grim2025 initiative is promoted by the Ministry of University and Research, with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. The celebration brought together over 100 Italian researchers currently working in UAE universities and research centres and coincided with an important visit to the Emirates by a delegation from the Italian National Research Council, led by its President, Prof. Maria Chiara Carrozza.
The event highlighted the growing importance of scientific collaboration between Italy and the UAE. Ambassador Lorenzo Fanara said: 'Upon my arrival in Abu Dhabi, I decided to strongly strengthen scientific diplomacy by investing in the presence of more than 150 Italian researchers working in Emirates universities. The Italian Embassy has also set up a network of Italian researchers to foster scientific relations between Italian and Emirati universities. By supporting these scientific exchanges, we aim to strengthen our bilateral cooperation and emphasise the significant role of research and dialogue in promoting innovation, peaceful coexistence and economic progress'.
After the Ambassador's greetings, the President of the National Research Council (CNR), Prof. Carrozza, outlined the achievements and future plans of the Italian research community: 'Scientific research,' she said, 'is today deeply involved in addressing the urgent and no longer postponable challenges that affect the future of our planet: the ecological transition, energy and food supply, conservation of world biodiversity, and mitigation of climate-environmental impacts, to name but a few. These are cross-cutting and highly complex issues, which require the creation of a 'global knowledge ecosystem' in which the expertise of different cultures and worlds can be harnessed. In this framework, I consider the presence here of so many good Italian researchers, who are strongly committed to making significant progress in various fields and contribute to creating a cultural environment based on scientific excellence and innovation, to be of value'.
The Executive Director of the Quantum Physics Division of the Institute for Technological Innovation (TII), Prof. Amico, spoke about the collaboration between Italy and the UAE, and noted that "2025 has been declared by the United Nations as the 'Year of Quantum Science and Technology'. TII has achieved remarkable milestones in quantum research, putting Abu Dhabi at the forefront of technological innovation. Our collaborations with international partners, including Italy, have led to revolutionary breakthroughs that have pushed the boundaries of the possible. Together, we are shaping a future where science knows no boundaries and innovation thrives."
