The Italian Ambassador to Canada, Alessandro Cattaneo, travelled to Edmonton, Alberta, where he will stay on an official visit until tomorrow.
During the visit, the ambassador was received by the lieutenant general (viceregal representative in Alberta), Salma Lakhani, and by the speaker of the Alberta Legislative Assembly, Nathan Cooper, who invited him to attend a session of the legislative assembly.
Ambassador Cattaneo then had working meetings with Alberta Premier Danielle Smith, Minister of Technology and Innovation, Nate Glubish, and Minister of Jobs, Economy and Trade, Matt Jones.
The various meetings discussed the growing industrial and commercial partnership between Italy and Alberta - with a focus on key sectors such as artificial intelligence, aerospace and energy - and opportunities for diversification of trade and investment.
The focus of the meetings was also the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics and the strengthening of bilateral cooperation in science and technology, in light of the presence of numerous Italian researchers with prominent positions at the main centres of excellence in the Canadian province.
The mission, enriched by a meeting at the Amii artificial intelligence research centre, world leader in machine learning, finally included a visit to the Italian consular office in Edmonton and a meeting with a qualified representative of the Italian-Canadian community at the local Italian Cultural Centre.
