To mark the upcoming World Holocaust Victims' Memorial Day (27 January), the Italian Cultural Institute in Zagreb organised the concert-show "Caffè Odessa", by and with theatre director and actress Miriam Camerini and other artists.
The event aimed to make people reflect on the tragedy of the Shoah, bringing to the stage the richness of Jewish music, language and identity, in an atmosphere reminiscent of the Jewish quarter of Odessa.
The initiative was opened by the Italian Ambassador to Croatia, Paolo Trichilo, who emphasised Italy's commitment to keeping alive the memory of one of the darkest pages of humanity, as witnessed by the establishment of the Day of Remembrance at the national level as early as 2000, five years before the adoption of the UN Resolution that sanctioned the commemoration at the international level.
The Ambassador also paid tribute to the victims of the Croatian and Italian Jewish communities and recalled the sacrifice of the many men and women from our country who courageously put their lives at risk to save Jews from the Holocaust, earning the important recognition as 'Righteous Among the Nations'. Lastly, he renewed Italy's commitment to continue working with Croatia and all its international partners to promote freedom and peace and to protect human dignity and rights.
