On the occasion of National Unity and Armed Forces Day, the Italian Ambassador to Poland Luca Franchetti Pardo, accompanied by the Defence Attaché Stefano Cavaliere, yesterday honoured the Italian Fallen from all wars by laying a laurel wreath at the Italian Military Cemetery in Bielany in Warsaw.
During the solemn ceremony, in the presence of the military and religious authorities, Franchetti Pardo paid a heartfelt tribute to the thousands of Italian soldiers who fell during the First and Second World Wars and who rest in Bielany. He also recalled the sixty soldiers whose remains were recently exhumed at a former German prison camp near Łambinowice in central Poland and temporarily transferred to Bielany. Speaking in the evening before high-ranking military authorities from Poland as well as other countries, the ambassador expressed his moving thoughts to those who had fallen, sacrificing their lives for Italy.
In this regard, he recalled the words of the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella: 'Their memory sounds an exhortation to the civil conscience of the country, especially to the younger generations, so that they know how to walk the path of commitment to the defence of the values of the Constitution'.
