Italy's agri-food sector risks losing 1.6 billion euros worth of exports after US President Donald Trump imposed hefty new tariffs, farmers' association Coldiretti said on Thursday.
"We had hoped common sense would prevail. Unfortunately it did not," said Coldiretti President Ettore Prandini, on the sidelines of a meeting in Catania.
"But diplomatic efforts must not stop, especially on the side of the European institutions, to pursue a path that can lead us to reverse the introduction of 20% tariffs by President Donald Trump on all European and Italian goods sectors.
"There is no doubt that there is a huge risk for the agro-food industry.
"We risk losing 1.6 billion euros in exports, especially in some sectors, such as the wine sector, which is an area if excellence recognized by American consumers today.
"Above all, it is a sector that has invested significantly in quality and recognition among consumers, who have increasingly chosen it as a distinctive element for the quality of the product offered.
"It is now more important than ever to ensure that Europe is not divided, that selfishness does not prevail, that there is a vision of involvement of all 27 member states, creating the conditions for which we can also overcome all the elements that have characterized Europe in recent years, with the introduction of useless bureaucracy that has penalized the growth of our businesses".
